STEPHEN M. KOHN is a partner in the Washington, D.C., law firm of Kohn, Kohn & Colapinto, LLP, and Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the National Whistleblower Center. He is the former Director of Corporate Litigation for the Government Accountability Project. Nationally recognized for his scholarship and litigation on behalf of whistleblowers, Kohn in 1985 authored the first legal text on whistleblower law. He is the author of Concepts and Procedures in Whistleblower Law (Quorum, 2000).

Scary and enlightening. The author dedicated years of his life to obtaining what the government never wanted to acknowledge - that in this country that is presented to the world as a "beacon of democracy", there have been political prisoners, treated abysmally by the government and persecuted despite the constitutional guarantee of freedom of speech. The scarier part is that political persecution did not stop in the McCarthy era, it continues now, whistleblowers are cruelly persecuted, criminal cases and disciplinary actions are consistently fabricated against them. The only regret is that the book is too expensive for a wide readership. Public needs to know what kind of abominable human rights violations against critics of governmental misconduct the government perpetrates, always in the name of the People.

Invaluable Account of Crimes against Free Speech in America

Stephen M. Kohn undertook a formidable task: to extract information from government agencies, both federal and state, to write a detailed account of how citizens’ basic rights were abridged during the World War I period. The amount and extent of details he assembles in American Political Prisoners is extraordinary. For the first time, scholars and the general public have access to the details of the assault on free speech, a free press, and the right to free assembly. Individual’s names and circumstances, their trials and convictions, and the nature of their punishment are systematically presented. Name after name exposes the harsh reality of the excesses of government repression.
I found American Political Prisons invaluable during my own research into a biography of one of these individuals caught up in the hyper-nationalism and the Red Scare of the World War I period. His work made apparent how many Americans had their careers and family life greatly interrupted, their faith in government shaken, and often their lives ruined – all for exercising their generally understood rights.
