Filled with reproductions of Kehinde Wiley’s bold, colorful, and monumental work, this book encompasses the artist’s various series of paintings as well as his sculptural work—which boldly explore ideas about race, power, and tradition. Celebrated for his classically styled paintings that depict African American men in heroic poses, Kehinde Wiley is among the expanding ranks of prominent black artists—such as Sanford Biggers, Yinka Shonibare, Mickalene Thomas, and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye—who are reworking art history and questioning its depictions of people of color. Co-published with the Brooklyn Museum of Art for the major touring retrospective, this volume surveys Wiley’s career from 2001 to the present. It includes early portraits of the men Wiley observed on Harlem’s streets, and which laid the foundation for his acclaimed reworkings of Old Master paintings by Titian, van Dyke, Manet, and others, in which he replaces historical subjects with young African American men in contemporary attire: puffy jackets, sneakers, hoodies, and baseball caps. Also included is a generous selection from Wiley’s ongoing World Stage project; several of his enormous Down paintings; striking male portrait busts in bronze; and examples from the artist’s new series of stained glass windows. Accompanying the illustrations are essays that introduce readers to the arc of Wiley’s career, its critical reception, and ongoing evolution.

Wow!
By A voracious reader
I also own a copy of "Kehinde Wiley" and it's an equally-beautiful book. The artwork in this book is absolutely *gorgeous*; the pictures practically jump off the page and the colors are wonderful. There's also a very interesting write-up and the Brooklyn Museum of Art has done a terrific job all-around.
The paintings shown in this book are currently exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum of Art through May 24.

Glorious Work Well Presented
By Martine Sherrill
Excellent illustrations, crisp and color correct. Text is legible and captions are logically placed. Things like this would seem obvious in publishing, but so many art books are frustrating - muddy colors, flipping and hunting for attributions, and incomplete captions.
My only criticism with its design is the teeny tiny text. It could be a couple font sizes larger without compromising the visuals. There's still lots of white space available.
It has top notch design for showcasing the artist's work, and not the book designer. Which makes for a top notch book designer! If more exhibition catalogs were this nicely made, and reasonably priced, I would buy them.
As far as Kehinde Wiley's work, it is original and glorious in all respects.

Kehinde Wiley Is Amazing
By Ec-lec-tic
Beautiful book! Images lack the high quality found in most photographic monographs, but for the price, the quality works for me. I cannot wait to see this when it opens at the Seattle Art Museum. I've followed Wiley's work since I met him during a trip via Chicago and then again during his residency at the CMA in Columbus, OH. His work is highly conceptual, but contains aesthetics anyone can enjoy and respect.
