Philip's Stargazing with Binoculars, by Robin Scagell, David Frydman

Philip's Stargazing with Binoculars, fully revised and updated for this new edition, is a practical guide describing the wide range of objects that anyone can observe in the night sky using normal binoculars. It gives clear, step-by-step instructions for finding objects, and explains what you can expect to see from both northern and southern hemispheres. It also offers useful advice about choosing and using mounts and other accessories. Binoculars provide a great start in astronomy. Compared with telescopes, they are comparatively cheap and easy to use, they are light and compact, and can be used for many other activities such as birdwatching. But when you are out there on a starry night, how do you know what to look at? Where are the best objects to observe through binoculars? Just how much can you see, and what are the tips and tricks for getting the most out of them? Philip's Stargazing with Binoculars reveals what to expect from a pair of binoculars and how to choose the right ones if you are buying for the first time, or upgrading. It gives straightforward explanations of how they work, and how to progress from first-time user to hobby observer. It gives practical help for setting up and using any binoculars, and provides examples of objects to look at with different sizes of binoculars, from both town and country, including the Sun, Moon, planets, comets, asteroids, stars, clusters, variable stars, double stars, novae, nebulae and galaxies. Aimed principally at newcomers to astronomy of all ages, who would like to begin observing for themselves, and perhaps make contact with other amateur observers, Philip's Stargazing with Binoculars describes a wide range of binoculars that are internationally available, with examples of objects to observe taken from both northern and southern hemispheres. The guidance given is appropriate for all observing conditions. Completing the book is a glossary of technical terms and an index, making it even easier for the beginner to use and understand.

Review
You don't need a fancy, expensive telescope to enjoy the twinkly treasures of the nighttime sky. This handy, compact guide offers practical advice on buying the right kind of binoculars for stargazing, dozens of charts and graphs, and a bounty of tips on observing -- and contemplating -- the moon, planets, comets, asteroids, nebulas and other celestial bodies that come out after the sun goes down. (Neil Pond American Profile 2010-05-09)

Astronomy is cooler than birdwatching and a lot less creepy than spying on your cottage neighbours. Get started with this beginner's guide, newly updated and revised. (Cottage Life)

What distinguishes this volume aren't the charts but rather the practical advice and clear instruction. (John Sledge Mobile Press-Register 2011-04-10)

A serious contender for the title of best all-around introduction to binocular astronomy. (Sky and Telescope)

It's hard to go wrong with a Firefly book, and this one is no exception... The book is packed with text, photographs, charts and diagrams. (Sunday Herald 2013-05-12)

An Excellent Guide For the New Astronomer
By Amazon Customer
PROS:

This book is packed with enough enformation to keep the reader busy for months.
This book flows with an easy to read style that both novice and experienced stargazers will appreciate.
This book is laid out in a great format that takes into account the various months of the year.
This book blends a good mix of practical observing information and descriptions of various astronomical objects.
This book offers sound advice on the selection of a pair of binoculars.
This book's compact size, coupled with a pair of binoculars offers a great traveling astronomy kit.
This book has easy to read sketches and maps. Many of the pictures mirror the views seen through binoculars.
All in all it is a well put together field guide to astronomy with binoculars.
This book is equally usable to readers in the northern and southern hemispheres.

CONS:

I wish just a little more space was given to the moon. An entire chapter could have been dedicated to the moon. Every few hours the moon looks different through binoculars. A number of the features can be identified.
I wish a few more of the sketches and pictures were similar to actual views through binoculars. Pretty pictures taken by large telescopes can lead readers to expect more than binoculars deliver.
I've spent a lot of time doing astronomy through binoculars. I think this book is overly optimistic at times with what can be seen observed. The book is not wrong, but some of the objects need large binoculars and dark skies.

FINAL RECOMMENDATION:

***** (5 stars). This book is a quality field guide. Buy it, grab a pair of binoculars, and keep them with you this year. It is a great, yet inexpensive, way to begin astronomy.

Fantastic book for starter
By Anon
I picked up this book and couldn't put it down. I agree with my other reviewer (just two reviewers as of today). This book is packed with lots of contents all the things you need to navigate the horizon. I did exaggerate that a little bit. For novice star gazer, this book takes you through from getting to know a the constellation you can easily observed each month in a year. This is probably one of the few book I picked up that described the sky from both northern and southern hemisphear. There are plenty of detail for what I expect to be a getting to know the sky book. For the price on Amazon, $8, I would give it 6 stars if I can. Throughout the book, you will get to know the stars, constellations, galaxies, nebulars, and how to spot them. Although some objects are quite small with naked eyes, with the help of a binocular, there are quite a lot of stars you can see from a clear sky in the suburbs.

Not too useful as a guide
By Adam U.
Informative, but not well organized. Not too useful as a guide. Not to mention many of the items described are recommended to be viewed with a telescope instead of binos. Kind of contradicrory to its own title.
