I'm Glad I bought this!!!

I am very reluctant to buy books that I haven't been able to flip through to see if it is easy for ME to understand. I am just beginning to sew and none of the libraries I visited had this version so I couldn't borrow it. I rely heavily on reviews so I felt compelled to write one because all of them have helped me decide. I looked and looked and read and read all about this book. This is by far the BEST book for sewing that I have seen. Hands down. Very easy to follow and it is sectioned off by title; Stitches and Seams, Waistlines and belts, etc. There are projects for you to practice a certain area. Like in chapter 5: Waistlines and Belts, the project is a Skirt to practice a certain waistline. It has a very nice Fabric section which gives a quick overview of the fabrics and what types of project you might see made with it. It has a very comprehensive section on altering and fitting a pattern to YOUR size. I just got the book today, but I haven't been able to put it down. I am so looking forward to learning how to sew with this at my side. If you are on the fence, I think it is a worthwhile purchase and very worth the money spent. If you really want to learn how to sew, invest in your craft with a good reference book and buy this one. It will probably be the only one you will need! I hope this helps.

THE BEST SEWING REFERENCE BOOK!

I looked at many books before deciding on this one. It has way more photos and easy to understand directions than the others I looked through.
I mainly wanted a book to use for reference when doing things I don't commonly do and forget how. But, now that I have it I realize I'll use it for way more than just that. It shows many different methods for doing basically the same thing. Some ways for basic and easy, and some ways for a more professional detailed look. Gotta love that.
This hardcover book is very thick and heavy. It's definitely made to last! I do wish it had come spiral bound so it would lay flat while reading, although it is heavy enough that I don't have any trouble keeping it opened to read. It just takes up a bit more space than a spiral bound would have. But, I feel that it's usefulness way surpasses my preference for a spiral bound.
It covers many topics and shows many different ways to do a variety of collars, necklines, waistbands, hems, fastenings, seams, pockets, sleeves, tailoring, and even some quilting and smocking! Tons of information!

Because it is recommended at my school, I was already sure of my decision to purchase it. When it arrived, however, I was sort of blown away. More than I knew and anticipated to be. It is SO informational. I really look forward to using this book more and more. Along with the book How To Make Patters by Donald H. McCunn I purchased, I plan to use them both simultaneously to make patterns. For guys, if you are looking for a way to make patters because the market offers literally nothing of this generation (no matter your age), then purchase these books. They give you the basics and the rest is up to your imagination. Don't be afraid to experiment. It not only works for the seasoned seamstress (as my teachers have been teaching longer than.. well, for decades), but also for someone who is a beginner, like myself. It's explained in a "plain-English" way, so if someone who has no knowledge whatsoever were to read it, they would understand because Readers Digest makes it easy to understand. There are things that you may not also understand (very, very few- if any) , but don't let that stop you-- that's why Google was invented. It also tells you about different fabrics and what they are used for which is really helpful for beginners (like myself) who want to learn how to sew but don't know what fabrics work best for different garments. It's a bit heavy and wide, so you might need to lay it flat if you have a bookshelf as it will stick out (unless that's not an issue for you). I hope that's a good-enough review on it. I promise you won't be disappointed. If by chance you are, you can always return it.
