About the Author

Charles E. Hurst is emeritus professor of sociology at the College of Wooster in Ohio. His work focuses on issues of social status, comparative poverty and inequality, and the uses of theory in understanding contemporary problems. Recently these interests also include studies of status in Amish communities in Ohio.

Anne M. Nurse is a professor of sociology at the College of Wooster in Ohio. Author of two books and multiple articles on juvenile incarceration and its impact on families and communities, she is an expert on inequality and the criminal justice system. She also teaches courses in statistics, criminology, and research methods.

Heather M. Fitz Gibbon is a professor of sociology at the College of Wooster in Ohio. Her published research focuses on definitions of motherhood within the welfare system and on child care systems. She has also been an active community based researcher, evaluating anti-poverty and family literacy community programs.

WHIRLWIND: Read it again!

I first read Whirlwind when it hit the bookstores in '88. I was a Clavell fan since Shogun and eagerly awaited his newest novel. I was slightly disappointed with the book at the time, thinking it didn't live up to my favorites, Shogan and Tai Pan.
Last week I picked up Whirlwind again, because of the events of 9-11 and the current focus on Islamic fundamentalists.
Whirlwind is about the creation of an Islamic state in Iran. At the beginning of the book the Shaw has fled and Khomeni returns. Everywhere there is chaos and the story centers around a group of expat Europeans who try to deal with and ultimately extricate themselves from Iran before they lose everything.
The book begins and ends with a righteous Mullah's thoughts. At the end the Mullah has discovered the weakness of the Europeans (non-believers), the key to their future control: They value the individual. By putting his foot on the neck of one non-believer, a Believer can control millions. This is the message he vows to spread to all Believers (Muslims).
Whirlwnd is strangely prophetic and relevant in light of the 9-11 tragedies. I understood and enjoyed it more today than I did in '88. I highly recommend it.

Love Clavell

My husband is reading this out loud to me. He's got a great voice! We've read all of Clavell's other novels in the Asian Saga, except I have not yet read "King Rat." Each one has been a real page turner. Clavell is one of my favorites.

Worst Clavell novel; no relation with saga Noble House. Full of chopter pilots getting out from Iran after Shas' fall. Just divetimento over great previous books of the Taipan saga. Pitty.

Parents, Must Read!

I come from a home where Domestic Violence was sadly a normal occurrence that sprung up upon my parent's divorce and my father's remarriage. I'm now 22, but still deal with anxiety, depression, and many other issues due to what I experienced growing up. I do not like to hear stories or even witness domestic violence surrounding homes of people I know.

I began reading this guide in how it discusses the results that take place from children experiencing these terrible things. It's not a pleasant nor a peaceful experience, trust me. About the Author
Dr. Gary A. Porter earned his M.B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Colorado. Throughout his career, Dr. Porter has taught at several universities, including San Diego State; Loyola University Chicago; and the University of Montana. He has also served as a department chair. He is currently Distinguished Lecturer at Drake University. Widely published and the recipient of numerous teaching awards, Dr. Porter has conducted workshops on introductory accounting education and corporate financial reporting, has worked as a staff accountant with Deloitte & Touche, and has actively served the Illinois CPA Society, American Accounting Association, and Financial Executives International.

Dr. Curtis L. Norton received his Ph.D. from Arizona State University and an M.B.A. from the University of South Dakota. He is currently Clinical Professor of Accounting at Arizona State University. As Professor of Accounting at Northern Illinois University for more than 30 years, Dr. Norton earned the University Excellence Teaching Award and has published in The Accounting Review, The Journal of Accounting Education, CPA Journal, and many other professional journals. A member of the American Accounting Association and Financial Executives International, he also consults and conducts training for private and governmental authorities, banks, and utilities.

To learn to listen

This book contains the text of the six Charles Eliot Norton lectures that Copland gave at Harvard. Copland thinks about Music and its meaning. He speaks about the creation and appreciation of Music as activities of the Imagination. He rails against the fuddy- duddy music scene in which all over the world a very limited repertoire of classic works holds the stage. He talks about the special affinities composers have for different types of instruments. He argues for a greater openness to new Music. He distinguishes between the capacity of the ordinary listenerer and the professional musician in terms of their ability to anticipate what is next in the score.

He teaches throughout the meaning of being a listener and lover of Music.

It's not written to be a concise analysis of any certain subject, but a series of lectures that could be enjoyed at the same time that they were informative.

This book provides great insight into the mind of our great American composer. He speaks on a wide range of subjects, but seems to cycle around the American classical music and it's development. He brings to mind the processes that go along with composing and creating music, and his respect and appreciation for other composers makes this a positive, uplifting but informative and thought-provoking book.

short but profound

Of all the books out there about music, page for page this is one of the best. It's a composer's perspective on why music gets composed, and HOW it gets composed. Copland takes you into the thought processes of musical creation. If you've ever been tempted to subscribe to the idea that music is a universal language, Copland undercuts that idea by exploring the theme of music as NONVERBAL SYMBOLS in a SYSTEM of inherited sounds. The second half of the book is dated, because he's addressing issues that were contemporary in the 1950s. But the first half is well worth reading.
