I can't think of a better time of year to let the people closest to you know how much they have impacted your life and how much you appreciate them doing so. In 'Symphony in Blue' by Shira Anthony, David Sommers hosts a moveable feast in order to provide everyone seated at the table an opportunity to declare what they are most thankful for. As each person adds their contribution, we are gifted with a review of their stories in the series and an update for each couple. It's an amazing story-telling technique and I commend Shira for creating it. It's just enough flashback to help us remember the trials and tribulations of how the got together to begin with and a testament to their enduring love and growth in the present. It's heartwarming to know that these brilliant, talented, creative, opinionated, and gifted men have been able to overcome their pasts and grow, not only personally, but as a couple which provides them with the life they all so richly deserve.

Out of all the characters, David Sommers is the one who changes the most. Without Alex in his life to temper his moods, draw out his sensitivity and his great sense of humor, David would have been stuck in the stuffy, unemotional box he'd encased himself in, probably never to have known the special kind of love and joy that only Alex can bring. Alex's enduring patience and understanding helps bridge the gap between what David thought of himself in the past and how he now feels at present. It's a beautiful thing to see. Alex teaches David that he doesn't have to be 'in charge' all the time, doesn't have to keep such a firm, almost strangling grip on his emotions. Alex helps David see that he can love and is loveable.

If David had offered up a prayer for all of his friends, I imagine that it would be something very similar to this quote: “ This is my wish for you: Comfort on difficult days, smiles when sadness intrudes, rainbows to follow the clouds, laughter to kiss your lips, sunset to warm your heart, hugs when spirits sag, beauty for your eyes to see, friendships to brighten your being, faith so that you can believe, confidence for when you doubt, courage to know yourself, patience to accept the truth, Love to complete your life.”~ unknown

'Symphony in Blue' is written like a love letter, for us, the friends involved, and David and Alex, solidifying the connections in the lifelong journey of togetherness, dedicating themselves to the miracle of their unceasing love and striving to make each day better than the next. If you've read the other four books in the 'Blue Notes' series and savored them the way I have, then you will not want to pass up this very special literary gift. For those who haven't had the pleasure of reading this series, I urge you to do so as well. As the beginning quote stated, they will leave footprints in your hearts. The holidays are a time for friends and family to come together in celebration and thanks. Symphony in Blue brings together all the couples in the Blue Notes series for a very special occasion. Aiden and Sam are ready to get married but before that can happen Cary and Antonio’s baby daughter decides to make her appearance into the world earlier than anyone had anticipated. So instead of the huge reception planned, David Somers and his long time lover Alex Bishop bring everyone to their villa in Milan for a homecoming and Thanksgiving that they will never forget.

Join Sam and Aiden, Jules and Jason, David and Alex, and Cary and Antonio and friends as each couple shares something they are thankful for. Played out in four movements, this symphony is a celebration of friendship and love, orchestrated by David.

I have loved this incredible series since the release of the first story, Blue Notes. With the Blue Notes series, Shira Anthony (and for Prelude, Venona Keyes), has created an ensemble of musicians and their lovers that has intrigued us with their personalities, enthralled us with their music and beckoned to us with their love stories. Whether it was violinist Jules Bardon (with manager/lover Jason Greene), cellist Cary Redding (and his partner, entertainment lawyer Antonio Bianchi), operatic baritone Aiden Lind (with partner lawyer Sam Ryan), and finally conductor and Chicago Symphony Music Director David Somers and his partner, violinist Alex Bishop, Shira Anthony has used this incredible octet of musicians and their loves as the “voice” through which she has moved us with her deep love of and passion for the world of classical music as well as knowledge of the various art forms within.

A former opera singer, Shira Anthony was at one time as deeply immersed in this world as her characters are and it shows in every element, every note that threads itself through these stories. It is there in joy and in sorrow, through all the difficult times and choices these men have had to make. And because she has been there herself, her series has a realism and authenticity that gives these stories depth and texture.

As these couples sit around the Thanksgiving table in Milan, each reflects on their lives as they share with their friends (and readers) something specific they are thankful for. Anthony presents us with an intimate setting and a ritual I suspect occurs in more than one household around the country. For each man, each couple, the things they share brings the reader up to date in their careers and presents us with glimpses of their present day family life. I have to admit that Cary and Antonio’s memory is my favorite, with Cary (and Antonio) trying to deal with their son’s Massimo’s jealousy over the new born in their midst). It’s so real, with elements that will break your heart and then put them back together as father consoles child and reaffirms their love for him. One couple after the other, with emotions high, celebrate love and family among their dearest friends. It feels familiar and immediate and oh so lovely.

At 73 pages, Anthony packs a lot of feeling and music into her story. Yes, let us not forget about the music, such an integral part of the Blue Notes series. The story itself is a composition by David Somers, the dedication written by him. The performer list is that of all the characters in the series and the story plays out in five movements, each movement a sharing by someone at the table. This is an inventive format that works beautifully for this story and is so reflective of the entire series.

In many ways Symphony in Blue and the Blue Notes stories are a series of love letters from the author, sharing her passion and deep appreciation of the musicians and the music they live their lives by. I highly recommend not only Symphony in Blue but the entire Blue Notes series. If you are a fan already, then you will love catching up with all your favorite couples. If you are new to the series, then go back to the beginning as this story contains spoilers for all the rest. Either way, this one is not to be missed!

In this novella in the Blue Notes series, readers and fans get a chance to spend Thanksgiving with their four favorite couples. Who was your favorite pairing from the first four books in this series? David and Alex; Antonio and Cary; Jason and Jules; or Sam and Aiden? I know, I know.. it’s hard to choose just one!

David and Alex host the dinner at their villa in Milan with all the guys, David’s sister Rachel and a couple of kiddo’s. Each couple shares a story, something in their lives they are thankful for. Each of these stories gives a little more insight into that specific couples life and their story. David starts with the story of their arrival at the villa as Alex shimmied the wall to ‘break in’ since they hadn’t brought a key.

From there Cary and Antonio talk about their growing family, they just had their baby girl Graziella. And as much as their son Massi loves his little sister, there was a period of adjustment that tested Cary and made him question his ability to be a good father. Jason and Jules have a surprise for their friends, as well as Sam and Aiden. And at the end of the story Alex has a little something up his sleeve for his man.

I love how Anthony pulled all these characters from this series together and showed a very basic, vulnerable and human side to them all. And even these world renowned artists and musicians have lumps in their gravy at Thanksgiving!

A One-Stop Guide to Shopping in Guangzhou

I have for many years sold Chinese merchandise on eBay so this eBook looked like a must-have. I was expecting to see a boring listing of wholesale shops and not much more. Boy, did I get a surprise. About the first quarter of the book is essentially a very well done travel guide. And why not, if you are going there you need to know about airports and local transportation and where to stay and eat, etc. The author covers these topics as well as I have ever seen done and includes insider information to out-of-the-way places that you are unlikely to find anywhere else.

Next are the listings. This is very well organized with hundreds of listings in categories such as pet supplies, auto parts, electronics and over twenty more. The listings often contain amazing detail such as walking directions from a known landmark to a small, hidden shop. One listing even noted that the toilet was very smelly. The level of detail suggests that the author visited every place listed.

Finally, the last section is about books and videos about Guangzhou, both fiction and non-fiction and recommendations about using guides and interpreters.

Throughout the book all contact information is in English and Chinese. Take your Kindle along and just show the taxi driver the address in Chinese.

Having been to Guangzhou many times on business, I was impressed at the depth and accuracy of this innovative travel guide book. It is clear that the author not only knows Chinese culture but has an almost encyclopedic knowledge of the city's many and varied wholesale markets. For anybody planning a trip to Guangzhou, this is a book that will pay for itself many times over.

I FIRST READ THE BOOK HOLLYWOOD HOLDUP WHICH HAPPEN TO BE BOOK 12 I DIDN'T KNOW THAT AT THE TIME. I LOVE READING THESE BOOKS. I OWN ALL 1 THOUGH 15. THERE MY FAVORITE. THIS BOOK DEAD END. IS AWESOME. IT'S ABOUT ASHLEY AND BRYCE TIMBERLINE HAVE TO LEAVE AGAIN BUT THIS TIME WITHOUT SAYING GOODBYB TO ANY AND NOT GETTING ANYTHING FROM THIER HOUSE AND LEAVING BOO HECKLER FOR GOOD. I was blown away by Inbound Marketing for Dummies. Not at all what I was expecting for a "for Dummies" book. I expected some surface level information that left me desiring more information. What I got was a step by step blueprint into how to diagnose the online performance of a business, create a comprehensive inbound marketing strategy, and then implement that strategy for any business.

Scott goes way deeper than keyword research and creating content and covers mapping out customer purchase paths, optimizing websites for conversions, creating call to action maps, user testing, A/B testing, email marketing nurture campaigns, . This is no surface level book.

Someone told me a few days before I got this book: "there is no blueprint for inbound" and I totally agreed. And then I went through this book and created my blueprint. Thanks Scott! Seriously best $25 donation I've made in a long time.

Eagleton calls it what it is

For decades and centuries, Samuel Richardson's "Clarissa" has been discussed for its use of the epistolary form and for its approach to 18th Century social and moral relations. Terry Eagleton's concise and precise examination reveals the true story behind the letters: Clarissa was raped, not pressured, not seduced, but raped in just about every sense of the word.

Eagleton, in his book "Literary Theory, An Introduction" calls most of the major players and -isms of literary criticism into question. Defining them first, taking them apart (not deconstructing!) later. In this book, however, Eagleton mostly adopts a feminist and Marxist (I think) approach to the book, and reveals the class warfare and male dominance of the text. Without imposing 20th Century sensibilities on the mid-18th Century, Eagleton maps out the stages by which Clarissa is exploited, even by the standards of Richardson's time.

"The Rape of Clarissa" is just one more chapter in Eagleton's long and esteemed career.

Could have been better

The killer in Deadpool manages to takeover, Now he is out to kill everyone in the entire Marvel Universe.

I know a lot of people love Deadpool. I really haven't read that many of his stories. I had heard that they were darkly humorous.So, I was looking forward to this series. Unfortunately, I found it disappointing.

By putting the killer aspect of Deadpool's fractured psyche, it takes a lot of the humor out of his personality. Then what could have been epic fights between Deadpool and the other heroes and villians of Marvel, were often reduced to either Deadpool using a trick (which the heroes meekly fell for) or he just let them them kill him and then regenerated really quickly and killed them when they turned their backs. (Why they all forgot he could do that, I am not sure.) The heroes really didn't seem to use their powers or abilities very well. (Several Avengers had even gone into hiding instead of facing Deadpool.) There wasn't any great teaming up of superheroes(or villains) as has been seen so many times before. It seems Deadpool's power of regeneration works strangely. The worse the injury, the quicker he healed. Rip his head off and he had a new one in seconds but break his jaw and he actually has to reset it several minutes later.

Finally, without giving anything away, the ending is a fairly lame overdone gimmick.

This could have been a great what-if type story with some awesome battles. But it just didn't live up to its potential.

If you love Deadpool and the Marvel Universe

If you love Deadpool and the Marvel Universe, you'll love this.

Playing off Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe this runs Deadpool through the same gambit of killing everyone. The plot is extremely interesting and while some reviewers claim w/o spoilers that the ending 'has been done' ... sorry it's a great spin. I always enjoy 'what if' type stories, and it's interesting to imagine how who would fight/kill who. This book skimps a bit on the how who would kill who. There's a few deaths off screen where we don't quite see how it's done. They get some Omega levels out of the way for reasons. And even that isn't really a strong criticism, as they're limited in space and time and in some instances imagination is more interesting. And they DO cover plenty of the deaths and exactly how Deadpool goes about it. What Deadpool is wearing during his fight with Wolverine still can make me laugh so hard I practically cry.

This is actually one in a trilogy. The ending of the trilogy IMHO is meh. I enjoyed this book the most, which is self contained and you can walk away. I'd recommend the other two only if you're a huge Deadpool fan, there's plenty in it to make it worthwhile.

I'm limited with physical space so I'm very picky about what physical books I keep. This one is a keeper and one I've already reread to my enjoyment.

About the Author

Rolf H. J. Schlegel, PhD, DSc, is a professor of cytogenetics and plant breeding with over 40 years of experience in research and teaching advanced genetics and plant breeding in Germany and Bulgaria. Professor Schlegel has authored more than 200 research papers and other scientific contributions, co-coordinated international research projects, and been a scientific consultant at the Bulgarian Academy of Agricultural Sciences for several years. He earned his master’s in agriculture and plant breeding and his PhD and DSc in genetics and cytogenetics from the Martin Luther University, Halle/S., Germany. His latest book contributions include Dictionary of Plant Breeding (2009), 2nd ed. In his book Equipped for Good Work: A Guide for Pastors, Dr. Joe H. Cothen taught how to be a pastor. Now he addresses preaching and reminds the pastor that preaching is at the center of what he does.

Effective preachers vary the styles of their sermons in order to continually connect with the members of their congregation and to spread the Good News. Consistently negative fire-and-brimstone sermons would quickly lose their impact, and the listeners would lose interest.

Those perhaps most likely to lose interest are the teenage attendees. For the pastor, teenagers prove to be a particularly elusive and fickle audience; after all, they do know everything.

What teenagers need to know, however, are the lessons to be learned from the Bible. Chapter 12, "The Pulpit Is Waiting for the Man Who Can Speak to the Needs of Youth," addresses the needs and concerns of teenagers with several sermons that follow the "It Could Happen to You . . ." format. The sermons address running with the wrong crowd, dating carefully, and maintaining control.

Other chapters address the congregation as a whole and deal with such subjects as the Bible, evangelism, and discipleship.

"The pastor has to preach well and often," says the author. But how can he consistently do both? Here, Dr. Joe H. Cothen explains how the pastor can manage his myriad of duties (which range from visiting the sick members of his congregation to overseeing the construction of new church buildings) and still find the time to preach well.

In addition to balancing his hectic schedule, the pastor must be able not only to preach to the congregation but to reach them. If his sermons become predictable, monotonous, or boring, then his congregation will lose interest and not benefit from his preaching.

To capture and hold the attention of the congregation, the author offers numerous helpful techniques, including making the usual unusual. By utilizing this technique, the preacher may portray Moses as "the man with a stick." Doing so, he forces the members of his congregation to see Moses, and indeed, the acts of God, in a totally new perspective.
