About the Author
John Bateson is Executive Director of the Contra Costa Crisis Center in Contra Costa County, California and the author of Building Hope. He has served on the steering committee of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Far Too Many Broken Hearts ...

Most people do not know how many deaths occur at the bridge month in and month out every year. Most people also don't know that a net that would prevent those deaths was approved by the Bridge Authority in 2008, but was never installed because the money has not been allocated.

I was in that population of "most people" blissfully unaware of those two facts until my son jumped to his death from the bridge last year.

Mr.Bateson has written a thorough, eloquent and fair history of suicide on the bridge and the madness of allowing these deaths to continue. This book should be in the hands of many more people -- and particularly those who wish to change the two facts above.

I want to thank John Bateson for his book about suicide on the Golden Gate Bridge. I will never look at the
Golden Gate the same way again and indeed I have an entirely different regard for San Francisco. I used to see the place as a progessive city, now I see it is a back water town peopled by governing forces (Bridge District Commissioners of the Golden Gate) who are provincial snobs and ignorant. Every time I cross a bridge, over pass or see a tall structure in the Chicago area, I am looking for a suicide barrier. The tall fencing I often see on these structures is probably there not to keep people from leaping off, as much as it there to keep people from throwing trash on traffice below. Thank you John Bateson for your excellent book covering all aspects of the Bridge, barriers, and suicide: topics that are new to me except that I had to look back over my life and realize that I have known eight peolpe who have died by suicide.

Easy textbook

This "textbook" reminds me of middle school! There are very short chapters and short questions at the end of each chapter. These question sheets tear out for turning in. I thought all this info was common sense, and my professor realized how silly this book was 1/2 way through the semester and we stopped using it.

Not worth the money. Similar to a middle school work book. It may be helpful for individuals who are completely new to the field of SW. Would not recommend otherwise.

The online practices that come with the brand new book are also unhelpful and seem to be geared to individuals who have no understanding or are not familiar with the practice of social work.

INTERESTING STORY LINE

Along with an interesting story line, some lovely, sensitive, descriptive images.
A tight wrap-up at the end can't be called a "Disney Happy Ending" but certainly points in that direction and leaves you feeling pretty good for all the players.

A mixed metaphor "thew the baby out to spite her face" was a little bothersome and use of MLK's "content of their character" seemed accurate but a little jarring in the context of this "fictional" story.

These points kept this from being a 5 Star first effort............but a good read none-the-less.

Satisfying read

"A Potter's Sojourn", is a story about a man searching for a new life. This search takes him to Barbados, worlds away from the Northwest, to be a potter at a thriving pottery business in Barbados. In a short amount of time, Jason (protagonist), realizes he is tangled in a business that breeds corruption.

Page by page, you will find that Parzybok's descriptions of Barbados take you far away to the island, and Jason's humble approach to life coupled with his ceaseless goodwill to others, just as exhilarating. Also, readers that are interested in pottery will enjoy Parzybok's subtle ability to weave the world of a potter into his everyday life. A potter's hands create daily and this renewal and expectation of his daily work is intimately related to Jason's approach to life.

If you are looking for a story where a man with a unique potter's perspective rallies the locals to stand up against corruption against the stunning backdrop of the Caribbean and a burgeoning love story, "A Potter's Sojourn" will satisfy.

Review of I Am Darius

I gave it four stars because it is too soon to know its full value. It deals with the religious experiences of the author and makes several predictions of future events. Until we see the validity of the predictions its full value will be unknown. It is very interesting and spiritually uplifting, but introduces many things that surprised me. It is too soon to know if they also enlightened me.

The author of 25 books on philosophy, Professor Harris has held named chairs at four universities and has taught worldwide. His latest book, coedited with James A. Yunker, is Toward Genuine Global Governance: Critical Reactions to "Our Global Neighborhood" (Praeger, 1999).

Robert Stern is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Sheffield. He is the author of Hegel, Kant and the Structure of the Object (1990), Transcendental Arguments and Scepticism: Answering the Question of Justification (2000), Hegel and the 'Phenomenology of Spirit' (2002) and Hegelian Metaphysics (2009). He is editor of Transcendental Arguments: Problems and Prospects (1999) and G. W. F. Hegel: Critical Assessments (1993).

A GERMAN IDEALIST PHILOSOPHER WORKS UP TO THE IDEA OF "NATURE AS A WHOLE"

Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling (1775-1854) was a German "Idealist" philosopher. He wrote in the Preface to the first edition of this 1797 book, "now theoretical philosophy concerns itself only with the investigation into the reality of our knowledge AS SUCH; it belongs, however, to the APPLIED, under the name of a Philosophy of Nature, to derive from principles a DETERMINATE system of our knowledge...What physics is for THEORETICAL philosophy, HISTORY is for the PRACTICAL... Thus in working out the Philosophy of Nature and the Philosophy of Man, I hope to embrace the whole of APPLIED philosophy. From the former natural science, from the latter history, should receive a scientific foundation. The following essay is intended only to be the beginning of an execution of this plan... this work contains no scientific system, but only IDEAS for a philosophy of Nature. One may regard it as a series of individual discussions on this subject." (Pg. 3-4)

He states in the Introduction, "Philosophy is not something with which our mind, without its own agency, is originally and by nature imbued. It is throughout a work of freedom. It is for each only what he has himself made it; and therefore the idea of philosophy is also the result of philosophy itself; which, as an infinite science, is at the same time the science of itself." (Pg. 9)

He says, "If... we gather up Nature into a single Whole, mechanism... a regressive series of causes and effects, and purposiveness, that is, independence of mechanism, simultaneity of causes and effects, stand confronting each other. If we unite these two extremes, the idea arises in us of a purposiveness of the whole; Nature becomes a circle which returns into itself, a self-enclosed system... Now this absolute purposiveness of the whole of Nature if an Idea, which we do not think arbitrarily, but necessarily. We feel ourselves forced to relate every individual to such a purposiveness of the whole; where we find something in Nature that seems purposeless or quite contrary to purpose, we believe the whole scheme of things to be torn apart, and do not rest until the apparent refractoriness to purpose is converted to purposiveness from another viewpoint." (Pg. 40-41)

He summarizes, "If we again compare the different potencies with one another, we perceive that the first is subordinated as a whole to the first dimension, and the second to the second, but that in the organism the true third dimension is first attained, whereas in reason, without potency, the static mirror of absolute identity, as in its counterpart, fathomless space, which is identity erupting in the relativity of the embodiment of the infinite into the finite, all dimensions become indifferenced and lie in one. This is the general articulation of the universe, which it is the true task of the Philosophy of Nature to demonstrate as the same for all potencies of Nature." (Pg. 138-139)

He explains, "Dead matter is only the first stage of reality, over which we gradually clamber up to the idea of a NATURE. This is the final goal of our inquiries, which we must now already have in view." (Pg. 172) Later, he says, "The absolute identity and truly internal likeness of all matter, under every possible difference of form, is the one true core and centre of all material phenomena, whence they emanate as from their common root, and into which they strive to return. The chemical motions of bodies are the breakthrough of the essence, the endeavour to return from external and particular life into the internal and universal, into identity." (Pg. 219)

He concludes, "The final goal of all consideration and science of Nature can only be knowledge of the absolute unity which embraces the whole, and which allows itself to be known in Nature only from its one side. Nature, as it were, is its instrument, whereby, in an eternal manner, it brings to execution and reality what it prefigured in the absolute understanding. In Nature, therefore, the whole absolute is knowable, although appearing Nature produces only successively, and in (for us) endless development, what in true Nature exists all at once and in an eternal fashion. The root and essence of Nature is that which combines the infinite possibility of all things with the reality of the particular, and hence is the eternal urge and primal ground of all creation. So if, of this most perfect of all organic beings, which is at once the possibility and actuality of all things, we have hitherto contemplated only the separate sides into which it resolves itself for appearance, namely light and matter, there now stands open to us, in the disclosures of organic Nature, that path into the true interior whereby we penetrate at last to the most perfect knowledge of the divine Nature, in REASON, as the indifference wherein all things lie in equal weight and measure as one, and this veil is which the act of eternal producing is clothed, itself appears dissolved in the essence of absolute ideality. It is the highest pleasure of the soul to have penetrated, through science, to contemplation of this most perfect, all-satisfying and all-comprehending harmony, the knowledge of which is as far superior to any other as the whole is more excellent than the part, the essence better than the individual, and the ground of knowledge more splendid than knowledge itself." (Pg. 272-273)

Schelling's deeply speculative and metaphysical philosophy is very far from the current philosophical "mainstream"; and unlike his fellow Idealist Hegel, he has relatively few "advocates" today. But his book may still interest those studying the development of German Idealism [Kant, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel], or even those of a metaphysical (or even "New Age") bent.

About the Author
Poet David Whyte grew up with a strong, imaginative influence from his Irish mother among the hills and valleys of his father's Yorkshire. He now makes his home, with his family, in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.

The author of seven books of poetry and three books of prose, David Whyte holds a degree in Marine Zoology and has traveled extensively, including living and working as a naturalist guide in the Galapagos Islands and leading anthropological and natural history expeditions in the Andes, the Amazon and the Himalaya. He brings this wealth of experience to his poetry, lectures and workshops.

His life as a poet has created a readership and listenership in three normally mutually exclusive areas: the literate world of readings that most poets inhabit, the psychological and theological worlds of philosophical enquiry and the world of vocation, work and organizational leadership.

An Associate Fellow at Templeton College and Said Business School at the University of Oxford, he is one of the few poets to take his perspectives on creativity into the field of organizational development, where he works with many European, American and international companies. In spring of 2008 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Neumann College, Pennsylvania.

In organizational settings, using poetry and thoughtful commentary, he illustrates how we can foster qualities of courage and engagement; qualities needed if we are to respond to today s call for increased creativity and adaptability in the workplace. He brings a unique and important contribution to our understanding of the nature of individual and organizational change particularly through his perspectives on Conversational Leadership.

As Michael Weldon says in the foreword to his Psychotronic Video Guide: "Unlike other movie guides, nothing is omitted because it's in bad taste." Bad taste barely begins to cover the 3000 resolutely grade-B movies (some with grade-A aspirations and budgets) and the odd TV show included here. Weldon, who invented the word "psychotronic" and compiled The Psychotronic Encyclopedia of Film, includes horror (there are 15 movie titles beginning with the word "zombie"), science fiction, Blaxploitation, porn, spaghetti westerns and "anything that Roger Corman had anything to do with" in his purview.

Weldon is the leading authority on films deemed to be "psychotronic," a designation he stretches to encompass horror flicks, spaghetti westerns, low-budget quickies, exploitation films of all stripes--in short, anything disdained by the critical establishment. He made his mark with The Psychotronic Encyclopedia of Film (1981), to which this is a genuine sequel rather than an update. There is surprisingly little overlap in coverage between the two books, which makes this one attractive whether or not you own the Encyclopedia. Some new entries--Saturday Night Fever, Beverly Hills Copare questionable, not being, one would think, psychotronic by any stretch. But most of these 3,000 movies are thoroughly deranged, from The Abductors, in which slavers kidnap three cheerleaders, to the Hong Kong martial arts fantasy Zu: Warriors of the Magic Mountain. An index would be nice, for although the book is enjoyable browsing, who wants to sift through hundreds of entries to locate, say, the Mamie Van Doren movies? Some misunderstandings in the other reviews

I'll freely admit my admiration for Michael Weldon's work, this book, his previous, and his magazine. Even when I disagree with his assessment, he's always honest and straight-forward.
I read some other reviews complaining about the content, or lack thereof, in this book. I think there's a misundserstanding as to what this is. It is a continuation of Michael's previous book, the Psychotronic Encylcopedia. There may be references in the reviews to movies not listed here, but that's because those movies are listed in the Encyclopedia. The two books have very little common content.
I also read a complaint about inclusion of some mainstream pictures such as Basic Instinct. In defense, I would say that Michael's content covers exploitation films of all genres and budget levels, whether made for $26,000 or $26,000,000.
I also like Michael's editorial inserts in this volume, such as his favorite movies of each decade.
Both books are essential, though admittedly his first covers most of the classics. This volume, thankfully, is not only more up-to-date, but stretches back into the silent era as well.
I say...buy them both.

Michael Weldon conquers stuffy critics once more!

First off, I recommend you get the first volume, the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF FILM before getting this VIDEO GUIDE. Though this book is excellent in every way (except for the inclusion of so many action flicks), it is necessary to have both books. VIDEO GUIDE goes into newer films and neglects most of the timeless older flicks that we grew up with. Well, at least most of us, I'm only 15. The odd thing about this book is that it moves from the "outcast" section of a video store to the inner depths of "popular" categories, such as ACTION, COMEDY & DRAMA. So, get the ENCYCLOPEDIA first, then dive right into this excellent book and you will see how much more interesting and grand "psychotronic" films are than your everyday movie.

The Bible for Joe Bob Briggs wannabes!

This massive effort focuses mainly on horror, sci-fi, exploitation, drug, biker and other similar genre films. There are listings to over 3,000 movies/tv series/serials, giving reviews, inside information, cast & crew details. This is the biggest & best book of its kind available today & is a "must have" for anybody who really digs whacked-out movies. However, the author does make some extremely dubious choices for inclusion such as Beverly Hills Cop & Hunt For Red October. These & other films listed, are definately not Psychotronic by the author's own definition, but you have to take the good with the bad here. This is a book that will get hours & hours of repeated use & is definately worth the purchase price.

Perfect cooking for two

Indeed very true that although everything has been written on a recipe book it is very hard to estimate the ingredients and mostly it ends up too salty, bland or the meal is plenty that it would be stock in the fridge for days. This book is so great it offered cooking for two perfect recipe book for starting couple or for any single or individual that cooks up for himself then leaving out the rest for the next meal. Whats even great about this healthy cooking book is that it primarily focus on Paleo recipes that can actually help in your diet regimen. The recipes presented are easy to follow, the ingredients are accessible to find and the instructions are so precise that every after preparation and cooking your meal is perfect for consumption. This is a great book, an additional to my recipe books collection.

A delightful cookbook engineered for just two people!

Most cook books seem to assume you are cooking for 4 or more people. The result? You are left with a pile of food that goes right in the trash afterwards. Instead, this cookbook from the start knows exactly what this problem is like and ensures that all recipes are for just 2 people. This also works if you are just cooking for yourself. Then you have two portions. One for now and one for later.

The reason this matters is because you can't just divide all recipes by 2-4 to get the right serving size. The other huge benefit of this book is that it is packed with delicious paleo recipes. You get to have your cake and eat it too so to speak :)

A great help!

I may not need to be on a diet but anytime soon i know i would. I'm not growing any younger and my metabolism is getting slower. I am gaining weights each month. This book is a good start plus it has a nutritional value so no need to worry about measuring each ingredients calorie value. And it's an easy cook book. Instructions are easy to follow. And i have been using this book for my family as well. This has been a great help for me living healthy with my family.
