A Cisco book not limited to cisco devices.

This is my first ethical hacker book, it is very exciting!!. Covers almost every aspect of penetration testing in good length. Explains many types of scans a penetration tester can and can't perform, gives specific reason why you should choose to perform those different types of scan, which ones you should use to keep from being detected.
It gives an easy to understand explanation of types of attacks, how to performed, tools needed, and how to protect/detect from such attacks. It also discusses the difficulty of detecting certain of attacks.
It also has an entire chapter regarding the legal considerations and implication of penetration testing. And the great thing about this book is that even though it is cisco book, it covers many divices and operatings system.

Although I couldn't found pre-requirements for the book readers, I can recommended using this book to readers that answer to the following pre-requirements:

1. Have basic knowledgebase in Linux/Unix administrations.

2. Have good knowledgebase in TCP/IP Networking design and implementations

(Recommended to have at least CCNA and CCDA Certifications)

3. Have at least two years of experience in SMB-Enterprise infrastructure administrations.

Book Structure:

The book build as 16 self study chapters that's cover most of the information that's ethical hacker (or beginner penetration tester) needs.

The book begin with a nice introduction on the reasons that companies should use penetration testing and divided this reasons to major stages that's parallel to known security models (Like: C.I.A. :Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability).

The next chapters review the requirements to penetration testing and legal issues with penetration testing.

Chapter 2 - Legal and Ethics Considerations - Should cover more information from my point of view and add a warning message to people that work as penetration testers that need legal support from the law team from the test company and the target test company should be used.

Most of the companies and the management (Usually in states outside the United States) don't understand the consequence of this tests and don't know what to do with the test results.

Also, due the privacy invasion and the current laws against privacy invasion - this topic is very important to understand and to know how to handle.

Add this information to this book can help to complete the missing information in Chapter 2.

The next chapters cover most of the public known attack technique and give a real life scansions and solutions for attacks.

My conclusion is: The book is recommended to each IT staff and beginner penetration tester.

I found the book a bit dated. The book seemed more about Network Defense than Pen testing. For someone interested in Pen testing, there are much better books available

This is a great resource. I'm a relatively new professor, and I'm very interested in creating engaged, active classrooms. I keep this book in my bag so I can easily refer to it when designing lessons. It has lots of great ideas, is well organized, and provides effective rationale. As a math teacher, I am extremely interested in improving student learning and success. Elizbeth Barkley's techniques are focused on practical strategies that can readily assist the instructor and emphasizes the importance of how students learn. It also provides precise steps in addition to 50 tips to execute student engagement and active learning. This book also offers a solid discussion of the research on learning that supports the concept of student engagement. Assisting students on how to develop learning strategies that result in improved content retention should be the goal of any teacher. Good practical introduction

For years everyone has said that C++ is not for embedded or system level development. The book actually opens with the relevant quotes from Mr. Linus Torvalds, creator of the Linux kernel. However, what might have been true many years ago is no longer the case. C++ has evolved, and so did the relevant tools. Today it can be a viable option in some scenarios by helping you to write efficient and more secure/robust code. This book is an excellent introduction into using C++ for such tasks. It uses simple examples to give you a taster of what C++ can do for you. It will help you to solve some of the common problems of embedded development and provide clues and inspirations for others. I found it rather useful myself.

Incredible book! I recently became interested in embedded programming and had been using exclusively C, however I usually write code (light stuff for data analysis) in either C++ or python. So I was happy to find this ebook (which I can read on my phone during my commute to/from university) that covers useful embedded ideas using C++. Also the author compares with typical C implementation. I also like that the book was concise and code samples were uncluttered. Just a really awesome book, highly recommended.

A fun, informative, easy read!

This book is great. It covers so many different topics -- some I didn't even know where physics related! Before reading this book I did not have a strong understanding of physics, but I did find it interesting and I feel smarter after finishing it. I feel that I can relate more to my favorite show, Big Bang Theory, now :) My favorite topic is "Why is the sky blue" relating to optics and light refraction. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for something different. It is very well written. Easy to understand yet still very intelligent content. 5 stars from start to finish!

Comprehensive

This book addresses over 250 scientific subjects in ten categories such as classical mechanics, solids and fluids, quantum mechanics, and thermodynamics. The author addresses somewhat simple subjects such as what is physics, velocity, force, fluids, and more complex subjects as What is Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation, What is the Doppler Effect, and What does quantum mechanics tell us about hydrogen atoms. The book has some illustrations, many details even educated non-scientists do not know, and each section ends with a list of Further Readings.

The book is very comprehensive and many people who secure it will want to save it as an excellent source for information when information is desired. However, because it is so comprehensive some people will find it to be too technical. They may also be put off by the formulas the author inserts. But even these people might want to ignore parts they are uninterested in and use the book for the information that satisfies them; this is usually in the beginning of each discussion.

Definitely not the "For Dummies" edition

As a science nerd from way back, the recent uptick in interest in all things technical warms my heart. This book largely fans those flames, with a few caveats for non-scientific readers.

The book starts with classical mechanics, but covers a wide range of topics - matter and energy, atoms and solar systems, particles and waves (with some discussion of dual-nature implications). The writing is mostly accessible, with some topic headings that were clearly intended to appeal to a lay audience - "What does your blood pressure mean?," "What makes an atomic bomb work?" (Don't get your hopes up - the book won't help you build one.). There are lots of real-world examples used throughout, including everything from curve balls to x-rays.

Lay audience notwithstanding, however, the explanations in the text refer to things like polar coordinates and partial differentials, with the assumption that the reader knows what those are, and the formulas use Greek letters freely (for readers who aren't up on their rho's and tau's, it will be helpful to print out a Greek alphabet for reference while reading, if only so you know how to pronounce the equations). As a visual thinker, I do wish there had been more diagrams, or even a video. (Maybe a companion guide viewable on a 3D device?).

Looking at the book with an editor's eye, I was sad to find some typos of the type that a spell-check program would miss (including a figure reference in Chapter 4 that I'm pretty sure was off), and some odd sequencing of topics - in particular, the text discusses quantum mechanics before optics and atoms, which, among other things, meant that diffraction gratings were referred to before they were introduced. There is an index, which helps somewhat, but I wish there had also been a glossary. The chapter on quantum mechanics is one of the harder ones, and I also wound up completely confused at one point while reading it, until I realized that the "K" I was reading in the current equation meant "kinetic energy," while the previous "K" had meant "Kelvin." It helps to take frequent contemplation and comprehension breaks.

Foibles notwithstanding, I found this to be an interesting and valuable work, and a bit of a brain workout (NTTAWWT).
