Have you ever willingly read a writing guide cover-to-cover? I have.

In the past, I've had writing guides that I've flipped through, maybe I've read a page or two if I've needed to look up a specific issue, but this is the first time I've ever read a writing guide all the way through. This guide is entertaining!

Grammar Girl, because of her training in language and in the hard sciences, understands how to explain the importance of proper usage for clarity and she also explains when sometimes rules exist out of tradition. She also explains grammar myths and how to handle people who still buy into them. Her examples are easy to understand and fun (I especially like the section on misplaced modifiers). The quick and dirty tips and the pop quizzes throughout are also fun and handy.

Other bonuses include tips that perhaps were not designed specifically to help ESL learners, but would still be immensely helpful for such students. Tips like FANBOYS and ordering adjectives, for example, are things that many native speakers take for granted, but having them described simply but completely is helpful for any user of the English language.

Also included are tips for drafting and proofreading one's own writing. Additionally, she gives tips that as a comp teacher, I've tried to drill into my students' minds, like "show, don't tell," "avoid cliches like the plague," and "you need to know if a website is credible." I am so happy I have Grammar Girl to back me up on these points.

Personal anecdote: A couple of years ago, I was teaching comma rules to a technical writing class. I was trying to explain restrictive elements and nonrestrictive elements to the class and several of the students weren't getting it. They were frustrated and I was frustrated. As I read the section in this book about restrictive elements and nonrestrictive elements, I realized that if I'd just explained it the way Grammar Girl did, a whole lot of headaches would have been prevented. This book is coming with me to school every day so that when a grammar or usage question comes up, I can simply take Grammar Girl's wording and examples to explain it much more succinctly than I am often able on my own.(It's hard to come up with sentence examples on the fly, have you noticed?)

As a teacher, I have seen many writing handbooks, most of which cost upwards of $50. This book is a delight-- not only is it the best one I've seen in that it is fun, complete, and user-friendly, but it's also truly inexpensive. I am requiring it for my college composition class this fall, and I recommend it to every high school, ESL, and college writing teacher out there. Even if you don't require it as a text, you should still have it on hand in your book bag (like me) or have a copy or two in your classroom. Your students will thank you.

Helpful tips for writers of all ages

"The Ultimate Writing Guide for Students" is divided into an introduction, five chapters, an appendix, grammar at a glance, glossary and index, among other things. The five chapters focus on parts of speech, crafting sentences, understanding punctuation, quick tips on "dirty" or confusing words, and wisdom about writing as a whole.

Pop quizzes are scattered throughout to reinforce the explanations, and Grammar Girl offers easy and fun memory tricks to help with rules.

My favorite section of the "Ultimate Writing Guide for Students," is Grammar Girl's "Quick and Dirty Tips." Listed in alphabetical order, these entries range from "affect versus effect" and "farther versus further" to "it's versus its" and "lay versus lie." These entries get to the heart of the matter quickly and are easy to understand. And, as always, Grammar Girl's wit makes finding answers to sticky questions much more enjoyable.

My one complaint is the binding. This may seem trivial to some, but I would prefer a spiral binding for greater usability. I hate having to use another book to hold my reference book open. I suggest purchasing the paperback so that it can be spiral bound at Kinko's.

Is she my twin?

I teach college students English Composition. I feel like Grammar Girl (Mignon Fogarty) took my curriculum and converted it to a book. This writing guide for students is perfect. It's written in a very logical order and in a style that students should find easy to follow. As an instructor, I love her wit and obvious enthusiasm for grammar. I know most students are not excited to read about English and its grammatical rules, but this book makes those rules fun and gives hints on how to remember them. Although the title says this book is "for students," I think anyone who communicates in written form should own it. That means you.

great lesbian historical fiction

Historical fiction is my favorite read, but unfortunatley there just are't many historical novels written for lesbians. This author has produced two very well written novels that I loved. The characters are engaging, the prose is well done and the author has done a lot of research in order to get the feel of the time and place right.
This is a story of two young girls whose freindship blossomed on their trip across the plains,to the west coast, around 1860. One family ended up in California and the other in Oregon. You see how their lives progressed fifteen years later and how they become reaquainted.
I know I will treasure a story when I hate to see it end.

This was a nice story and there were some things I liked about it: The history of settling the Old West, a girl's need to pretend to be a man to get by and to be more herself. All of the characters seemed real and interesting as well. However, the beginning was slow and unnecessary. When the women found each other again, in the middle of the book, the joyful reunion never happened. There was never that moment when they were just so happy to be together again. No mention of why they never wrote to each other as they had promised, nothing. And the end! OMG! I would have given this book 4 stars if the author had chosen not to include the epilogue. No romance should ever end that way. I tried not to give away too much, and I hope I haven't spoiled it for anyone. It's really not a bad book, and even has some really great things about it. I would recommend it others, and I hope to read more from this author.

Disappointing

As children on a wagon train in the mid 1800's, Francis and Laurel meet and become fast. After months of traveling together, the wagon train splits; Francis's family traveling to Oregon, while Laurel's to San Francisco. Although they were separated by hundreds of miles for a decade, fate would bring them back together.

The first book of Kathryn Ewers Bundy's that I read was The New Women and greatly enjoyed her strong, clean, developed and polished writing. Each character in that story was completely fleshed out, realistic and relatable on some level; every scene was vivid; every emotion was experienced. The Overlanders, however, was extremely disappointing. I felt this novel was weak with under developed characters with inconsistent personas and unrealistic plot points. I was left feeling unsatisfied since I went in with high expectations from The New Women. In the end, The Overlanders was just another mediocre novel in the Lesbian genre.

My son needed it for a book report. I have no opinion about the content of the book. However, I was disappointed that a new book has the cover completely folded over when I unpacked it. I had to keep it because my son's book report and all the pages were fine.

Love this series of books!

I'm a homeschooler and my 8 year old son is studying American History this year. We have quite a few of the books from the "If You Lived..." series to go along with his studies, but when I saw this book I knew he would love it. These books are well written and entertaining. My son reads these himself or asks me to read them to him for fun rather than "school."

Great series

I like this book better than the DK reader about Knights and Castles. It's a great format with good illustrations.

My reservation with this book is that is made the medieval centuries seem so homogenous -- fashions and political systems were not as permanent or as pervasive as this book indicates. How could they be? Feudalism was in place across a huge geographical area and life was different in diffent parts of the world and at different times under different rulers and nobles.

Great writing. Vivid portraits. Magnificient narratives.

I just finished this magnificient volume. Morris has surely written a masterpiece. Many a time I have felt transfigured to 19th century India or sensed the wind on the African veld. The writing is stupendous. The portraits of characters just stunning. Alas! My only quibble is no pictures. NO PICTURES!!!! I have the Harcourt Brace publication and there are no pictures. Oh how I would like to see what Sleeman looked like! Nonetheless well worth the price.

Trilogy is a wonderful account of the British Empire

Jan Morris is a fascinating personality. She originally was a he, and he was a guardsman in the British army, an officer from a good family. He left the service, became a historian, and then went to Denmark or wherever, and came back a she. She now writes unusual, affecting, eccentric, entertaining books that are terribly British and a bit disorganized. The Pax Brittanica trilogy is her life's work, near enough, though she's done other books that are very good. This one, however, is three volumes long, quite involved and very detailed. The series includes Heaven's Command, Pax Britannica, and Farewell the Trumpets. The first generally deals with the Empire in the 1840s on, the second follows things through the thirties, and the third follows the empire through its disbandment.
As I said, Morris is eccentric. This means that though the books are sort of chronological, they aren't exactly sorted the way you would expect, and this isn't really a history of the empire or the era. Instead, it's an anecdotal collection of tales, incidents, and sketches, marvelously told. Sort of like the difference between going through a cafeteria once and a sumptuous buffet where you go back and forth, taking time with what you enjoy. I thoroughly enjoyed the books, though I would hesitate to recommend them to someone who wasn't clear on either geography, or at least some basic history of the British Empire. Since this isn't either of those, you need them to understand what she's talking about occasionally.

Amazing!

I'm always in the middle of reading history books, which I love: like a Chinese dinner, the fun is in the contrasts. (Someone else here was using a buffet in a slightly different sense.) Currently, I'm reading The Orientalist by Tom Reiss, Freedom from Fear by David Kennedy, The First Crusade by Thomas Asbridge, and of course, Heaven's Command by James Morris. All of them fill my minumum requirement for history books - good narrative. This may sound like a no-brainer, but some supposedly great history, for example, Bancroft Prize winner The Name of War, by Jill Lepore, is virtually unreadable.

James Morris's Pax Britannia is quite the opposite. I don't think I've ever read such delightful prose in a history book. To absorb information is work, and I rate a narrative is by how long it carries me before my brain needs a rest. So, what about Heaven's Command? I'm enjoying reading the other books mentioned above, but when I reach my fatigue point I can pick up Pax Britannica, or anything else by James/Jan Morris, and suddenly I'm refreshed. Here's an sample, referring to one of the Victorian nabobs in India: "He looks like one of those over-informed progressives whose inflexible convictions wither the small talk at frivolous dinner-parties."

It could be, as another reviewer has pointed out, that Morris's chronology isn't precise and that the style is episodic and anedcotal, but two things: First, whatever the chronology, it's not rambling. Yes, Morris follows the chapter on the Irish Famine with a chapter on the British Raj - obviously no chronology there. But there's synthesis going on here, a juxtaposition of the cruel and stupid administration of Ireland with the humane and enlightened administration of India. This thematic ordering of chapters is far better for gaining insight - at least Morris's insight - than a simple chronology. Second, "anecdotal" implies unscholarly. If you read enough history, you can tell when someone knows what they're talkng about and when they're faking it. Morris's assertions have weight. In fact, when some of the citations are dubious, Morris does not hesitate to say so, as in "I pass along this anecdote for what it's worth, not believing a word of it."

I suspect that the reason Morris's history is such a delight to read is that she also happens to be one of the great travel writers in the English language, and her first-hand experiences around the world have yielded a sense of immediacy brought home by a conversational writing style. It has also gained her authority, for Morris has actually visited many, perhaps even most, of the locations in Pax Britannica, and collected oral histories by the ancient inhabitants.

I may be at a slight advantage, because I've seen James Morris as Jan Morris, one of the expert commentators in the excellent Channel 5/PBS series Queen Victoria's Empire. Once one gets over the sex-change, one becomes aware of a bright and slightly mordant wit, which comes through in the prose of Heaven's Command. I highly recommend the series (ignore some of the inane reviews) as a general introduction to Pax Britannia.

If you read history for pleasure as well as enlightenment, I doubt if you could do much better than this book. Like all great historians, James Morris is a great storyteller. I look forward to the rest of the trilogy.

About the Author
Steven G. Mandis worked at Goldman Sachs from 1992 to 2004 in its investment banking, private equity, and proprietary trading areas. He assisted Hank Paulson and other senior executives on special projects and eventually became a portfolio manager in one of the largest and most successful proprietary trading areas at Goldman Sachs. Post-Goldman, he cofounded a multibillion-dollar global alternative asset management firm that was a trading and investment banking client of Goldman Sachs. During the financial crisis, Mandis was a senior adviser to McKinsey & Company before accepting a senior executive position at Citigroup. Currently, he is an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School and a PhD candidate in the sociology department at Columbia University. He holds an AB from the University of Chicago and an MA and MPhil from Columbia University.

Fascinating Case Study on Goldman's Cultural/Organizational Evolution

An incisive and thought-provoking read on how an organization, renowned for its unique culture, can slowly drift over the period of several decades due to internal and external pressures, where the line between putting clients’ interests first becomes blurred. Mandis’ perspectives, and those of the current and former Goldman employees he interviews, are incredibly valuable for anyone currently in or aspiring to hold a management position, so that they as insiders might recognize and consider the implications of their own organization’s drift.

Little bit boring in the middle chapters but, quite insightful.

It's much better than "Why I worked in Goldman Sachs". This book explains organizational drift in the sociology manner with a plain tone - like the way the old professor says. Meanwhile, you need to have high school level sociology back ground, and Senior level finance back ground, otherwise, it is hard to swallow. And, most of all, boring. The last chapter was O.K. but I was about to quit in the middle, and wanted to get a refund at the session. But if you are interested in the malfunction in the financial sector, also need some books to illustrate culture shift to cause few financial blunder on the Wall street - but not like Michael Lewis style book - I gonna recommend this book.

Hard to imagine another book with the amount of inside info as this one. Anyone interested in how cultures change (for better or worse) at any sort of large firm will find this book intriguing.
